As above, so below is a common phrase in spiritual teachings because it points to the way the inner life and the outer life mirror each other. In our culture, we are in a time of disconnect with our earth and, consequently, disconnect with ourselves. Coming back into a place of coherence inside and out, outside and in, requires thoughts, hearts, deeds dedicated to repair of this holy awareness of connection.
One of the most restorative places to begin, and a time honored starting point in spiritual practice, is to focus on connecting to our sacred origins. Earth based, indigenous cultures remember and teach of our inherent relationship with Earth and have touchstone stories to remind their communities that they are born from Earth.

At the taproot of the Judeo-Christian Genesis/Adam & Eve story is the mystical teaching of Adamah. In Hebrew, Adamah means red earth. Adamah is our original ancestor, representing both male and female and the balanced energies this implies. Adamah was formed of the red earth gathered from the four corners of creation and then filled with the breath of divine life force. Adamah is our origin point. A being that points to our oneness and our belonging, not only to each other as relatives descending from this one ancestor, but as those who belong to and are made from EARTH. Adamah is a way we can re-member— as in literally re-animate/take into our body— the awareness that we are not just a part of earth, we are MADE of earth, as is everything we share this planet with. When indigenous teachers address ‘all our relations’ it is this awareness that is being called up and sent forth. We are all made of the same stuff on an elemental level and this fact links us to earth and to all creation. I see great healing from mindless materialism when this awareness roosts and then dwells in each of our hearts.
